How to Make Handmade Coasters and Trays Using Resin

The use of resin to make irresistible pieces of gifts and wearables is familiar to all of us, but resin can make for amazing household items as well. Today, we’ll teach you how to make handmade coasters and trays using resin.

Although it might seem like rocket science, it’s not. You can make astonishing trays and resins in just a few simple steps. Sounds fun, right? Let’s do it!

Making a resin tray

Resin trays make for excellent additions to your household items. They’re beautiful, they’re eye-catching, and they’re sleek. But just because they’re so good doesn’t mean they’re hard to make. In fact, you can make yourself one in just a few simple steps and it’s a very fun activity. Here’s how.

Step#1
Get the materials. According to the laws of physics, you can’t make a resin tray out of nothing (IKR!? Boo!). To make a resin tray, you will be needing a tray mold, a couple of handles (optional), resin and color pigments (use heat-resistant resin if you plan on putting warm things on the tray), and silicone jugs, stir sticks, and mat. You can find all of these materials online at very reasonable pricing.

Step#2
Lay the mold on a flat surface; make sure it’s an extremely even and level surface. After making sure there are no bumps and unevenness in your mold, pour in the resin. You can use as many resin colors as you like, make sure to leave one color firm up for at least 10 minutes before pouring another. Use the second color as a decorative if you’re only using two. Use a heat gun to pop any bubbles that might have formed during the pouring of resin. Afterwards, let it cure.

Step#3
Once it’s completely cured, demold the resin tray and sand the rough edges if there are any. You can now install the handles using a drill to screw them in. You can also put the handles in while doing step two if you want to avoid drilling.
And that’s it! Your beautiful resin tray is ready.

Making resin coasters
Now that you have a wonderful resin tray, you wouldn’t want to miss out on having some nice coasters to go along with it, would you? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Here’s how you can make resin coasters.

Step#1
Just like you needed a mold for your resin tray, you will need molds for your coasters as well. There are many fun mold shapes available on the internet, so take your pick. The rest of the apparatus is the same as before—resin, color pigments, and the silicon tools and containers.

Step#2
Mix the resin in silicon containers and pour it into the molds. Just like before, you can experiment with the colors you like but we recommend using at least two colors to give the coasters a nice look. Use a heat gun to get rid of any fumes stuck inside the resin pour and let it cure.

Step#3
Once the resin is all set, demold it and sand out any overflow edges. Voila! You now have lovely resin coasters to complement your resin tray.
